NFTs: Collectively Building an Alternative Economy
Early net artists working from the 1990s to the early 2000s often chose the internet as a medium for experimentation and disruption, because it distinctly operated outside of the traditional art market. Many were proponents of the idea that their art should be released for free, because it aligned with the distributed potential of the internet itself. However, with the development of web 2.0, and the popularization of social media platforms, artists grew critical of providing free content and R&D for massive corporations that were profiting from their data and information. Around that time, artists began to explore different forms of monetization and valuation as critique. NFTs were introduced in early 2021 as a scalable solution that enables digital artists to monetize their work, effectively creating a new center of gravity for economic value. “NFTs: Collectively Building an Alternative Economy” is a presentation led by Lindsay Howard, Head of Community at Foundation. The workshop introduces key concepts to help artists better understand the NFT space so that they can engage with it both thoughtfully and critically.
