Leah Maldonado is a visual designer and self-proclaimed “analytical freakazoid” who designs expressionist type, explores cultural shorthand, creates narratives, and generally pushes boundaries with a candid style that celebrates shared emotional and cultural experiences.
Wednesday, 12/9, 12:30pm PST FREE and open to all!
Leah specializes in experimental type design and creates her own digital playground reminiscent of early 2000’s softcore cringe culture, building ephemeral visual dreamscapes. What does that look like? Imagine an aesthetic that celebrates clickbait, memes, and the experience of driving down a big road lined with car dealerships and buffets, as much as it honors a love of technique with beautiful design swoops and soft, glowing colors. Leah’s work evokes feelings, and pushes the line of what is “legible” in favor of what actually communicates.
After graduating from PSU in 2019, Leah has worked with Future Fonts, Wieden + Kennedy, and now with FISK projects. Through curiosity and play, Leah’s work explores theatrically-jarring-yet-organic type design, deep-fried poster design, and killer layouts.
Hosted by the BFA Graphic Design program at Pacific Northwest college of Art since 2016, the Design Lecture Series welcomes designers from all over the world to share their work and what moves them. The fall 2020 evolution of our series will take advantage of the potential for more interaction across our distances by hosting panel discussions in place of traditional lectures. As a way to open our doors and minds to the broad and vibrant possibilities in design, panels will be driven by current students in conversation with a diverse set of fascinating creative folks who break expectations of what design can be and do in the world today.
