The Design Lecture Series welcomes regional design thinkers to share their work and what moves them. This semester, we’re focused on powerful partnerships, collaborations, and group ventures.

Fran Bittakis (Joop Joop Creative, Seizure Palace) is here to dive deep into creative collaborations and talk about how connecting her communities together fuels her fire. She’ll share how her radical creative agency is breaking ground, using a social justice framework to challenge conventional paradigms and systems, working together with (and for) her communities and allies.

FRAN BITTAKIS/ฟราน บิทากิส (she/her) is Thai-American, born and raised in Chicago to immigrant parents and has lived in Portland since 2004. In 2019, she established and founded JOOP JOOP. Fran has been engaged in social justice and activism since the late 90’s (Food Not Bombs, booking punk shows and events, Youth Liberation Conference) and active again since 2016 (NXT LVL + SNACK BLOC). For the past 12 years, she has also been co-owner of Seizure Palace, a custom screen printing shop specializing in flatstock in Portland.

One of her biggest passions is to be involved in connecting her communities to each other while creating a positive impact through collaborating and producing projects with those communities.

JOOP JOOP is Fran’s latest venture, a radical creative agency in Portland specializing in producing events, photo shoots, music videos, film, social media content, and workshops, consultation, and curation. JOOP JOOP is committed to hiring and collaborating with womxn, BIPoC, LGBTQIA2S+ folx and accomplices.

“Our ultimate goal is to create work and content that is relevant to us, tell our stories through our lenses and bring them forward and take up space within these industries.”

With a plan to roll out an agency representing multidisciplinary creatives and crew in the near future, Fran is a master at creating projects that are greater than the sum of their separate parts, and we can’t wait to hear her talk more about what this work means to her and to all of us.

Presented by PNCA Graphic Design in collaboration with FISK Studio, the PNCA Design Lecture Series launched in Fall 2016 as a way to open our doors and minds to the broad and vibrant possibilities in design. In 2019, we joined forces with the Hallie Ford School of Graduate Studies to provide exciting talks on art and design every Wednesday night, open to the public throughout the school year.

We’re welcoming in design thinkers who break expectations of what graphic design can be and do. Join us!
