Off Campus Exhibition

Third Room 717 NE Broadway Suite 205

Graduate Exhibitions

Third Room is pleased to present Sari Not Sari, a collaborative multimedia installation of new works by Filipinx-American artists. Inspired by sari-sari stores in the Philippines and America, curator Pamela K. Santos assembled artists participated in conversation with each other about diasporic identities and cultural consumption. In celebration of Filipinx American History Month in October, Sari Not Sari opens Friday, October 26 with a reception 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., and will run through December 2.

Sari Not Sari explores what it means to unapologetically take up space as a Filipinx artist and person today. Using the sari-sari store as an entry point, the works imagine the possibilities of dialogues about decolonization, cultural transactions, anti-capitalist relationships, tensions and collaborations between what is individual and what is collective, and meanings imbued in objects and products. Vibrant colors as seen on signs and seas of product brands explode throughout the space. Kites made of Philippine-run newspapers with found poetry, arnis sticks made of bamboo, evolutions of beads and bones, cardboard replicas reminiscent of balikbayan life, modern interpretations of anting-anting amulets – each piece speaks to one another in themes of blank slates, power, protection, multiplicity.
